The USS West Virginia commissioned in 1923 and was one of the 'Big 5' battleships in the US Navy and was amongst the most powerful battleships in the world at the time. The 'Big 5' were almost identical but the California and Tennessee carried 12 14 inch guns, whilst the Colorado, West Virginia and Maryland had 8 16 inch guns.
West Virginia was present at Pearl Harbour on 7 December 1941 and was sunk after taking 7 torpedo hits. She was raised, made seaworthy and by May 1943 she was able to sail to Bremerton, on the US West coast for a complete rebuild. The rebuild featured a widened hull, new machinery and a totally new superstructure, secondry battery and AA weapons. The superstructure resembled that of the modern South Dakota class and by September 1944 she was back in Pearl Harbour.
West Virginia took part in the battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, first shelling Japanese positions prior to the landings and then taking part in the battle of Surigao Strait. During the night battle, West Virginia hit both Japanese battleships, Fuso and Yamashiro, with her 16 inch guns helping to sink both ships. After Leyte Gulf, West Virginia continued to support the US advance in the Pacific, finishing off the Philippine campaign before taking part in the operations to take Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After WW2, she took part in the Magic Carpet operation to rescue and repatriate ex POW's before decommissioning and being placed in reserve, she was eventually scrapped in 1959.
Trumpeter's USS West Virginia kit depicts her in 1945, when she was painted in a Dazzle camouflage and was carrying radar and plenty of AA guns. It would make a good counter-part to the model of her sister ship Colorado, given that West Virginia was rebuilt and Colorado wasn't.  The kit comes with optional waterline plate and lower hull with stand, so can be modelled either way.
This is a highly detailed plastic kit with a handful of etch metal parts and it is the first time USS West Virginia has be seen in kit form by a mainstream plastic kit maker, so is highly recommend.
