The USS Maryland commissioned in 1921 and was one of the 'Big 5' battleships in the US Navy and was amongst the most powerful battleships in the world at the time. The 'Big 5' were almost identical but the California and Tennessee carried 12 14 inch guns, whilst the Colorado, West Virginia and Maryland had 8 16 inch guns. Maryland was in Pearl Harbour when the Japanese attacked and received relatively minor damage from 2 bomb hits. She was repaired at Puget Sound and fitted with some more modern AA guns and was back at Pearl Harbour in February 1942. The older battleships such as Maryland, Colorado and Pennsylvania which suffered minor damage or weren't at Pearl Harbour were based at Pearl Harbour as a second line of defence as they were too slow to escort the Aircraft Carriers that now dominated the Pacific.
Because the likes of Maryland and the newer battleships such as Washington and South Dakota being in the available, it allowed the US to rebuild the Nevada, Pennsylvania, California, Tennessee and West Virginia, which had all been damaged in the Pearl Harbour attack. Maryland was never rebuilt but did receive extra 5 inch high angle guns as well as Bofors, Oerlikons and radar. She supported many of the landings during the US island hopping campaign of 1943-45 her main roles being that of shore bombardment and AA protection. She gained 7 battle stars during WW2 but did not fight in a major fleet battle, she was placed in reserve in 1947 and scrapped in 1959.
Trumpeter's USS Maryland kit depicts her in 1945, when she was painted in Navy Blue and was carrying radar and plenty of AA guns. That combined with the fact she was never rebuilt and still had a cage mast, makes her appearance both unique and interesting, differing from Colorado by having Twin 5 inch guns, not singles.  The kit comes with optional waterline plate and lower hull with stand, so can be modelled either way. This is a highly detailed plastic kit with a handful of etch metal parts and it is the first time USS Maryland has be seen in kit form by a mainstream plastic kit maker, so is highly recommended.
