The Fiat G.55 was one of the best Italian fighters of WW2 but came too late and in too few numbers to help the Italian air force fend off Allied air attacks. It competed against the Macchi C.205 Veltro and Reggiane Re2005 Sagittario for service in the Italian air force and although the Re2005 had the superior performance the G.55 proved to have better handling, stability and strength. It was powered by a licence built German DB605 (as in the Bf109G) and was well armed with up to three MG151 20mm cannons and two heavy machine guns. The Luftwaffe tested one in comparason with their current model Fw190A and Bf109G and felt the G.55 to be superior overall. In the hands of a skilled pilot it could match the Spitfire IX, P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt in combat.
This is Sword’s model of the G.55. Sword is a new manufacturer based in the Czech Republic. The kit is injection moulded in plastic with a good level of detail and engraved panel lines and also has resin wheel wells. This set contains 2 kits of the G.55 with 6 marking options on the decal sheet, for Italian aircraft.
