SH72408 1/72 Fairey Barracuda Mk.III 'ASW Mk.XI Radar'
- Customer Reviews
The Fairey Barracuda was designed to replace both the Swordfish and Albacore biplanes in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, and give them a modern strike aircraft. It was designed as both a torpedo and dive bomber and was powered by a Rolls Royce Merlin engine. The Fleet Air Arm now had a modern strike aircraft that could exceed 200mph. It could carry a torpedo or 1600lb Armour Piercing bomb under the fuselage and smaller bombs under the wings. Despite this it was underpowered, especially in warm climates and with a bomb load, this led to the American Grumman Avenger being favoured. The Barracuda is most well known for its attacks on the German Battleship Tirpitz. During Operation Tungsten, 42 Barracudas from Victorious and Furious, hit the Tirpitz with fourteen 1600lb AP bombs and 500lb GP bombs, putting the ship out of action for 2 months.
