At the start of WW2 the B-18 was considered underpowered, with too small a bomb load and defensive armament. Many of them were destroyed in the initial Japanese attacks, so played very little part in the war. Many were also held back to defend the mainland of the US in case of invasion, whilst the likes of the B-17 were produced and used in the front line.
The RCAF, obtained a small number of B-18's and used them as a maritime patrol aircraft off the Canadian coast and Caribbean. They had some success, sinking several U-boats but were replaced by far superior B-24 Liberators in 1943. After that the B-18 was relegated to transport and training duties.
Special Hobby is a Czech based manufacturer and this is their 1/72 Digby Mk I. It is a detailed multimedia kit, consisting of mostly injection moulded plastic parts but with additional resin and photo etch metal parts, including control panels and seatbelts.
The markings are for 7 different Canadian B-18's.
