The MiG-19 was developed as the Russian Air Force wanted a longer range, supersonic (in level flight) than the MiG-15 and MiG-17. It had two engines and could exceed 900 mph in level flight. It was the first mass produced fully supersonic fighter and it equipped many Warsaw Pact and Russian friendly countries. It was also built in China as the Shenyang J-6 (or F-6). The MiG-19, like most MiG's was made in many versions and continually developed over the years. It was fitted with a radar and carried 30mm cannons and could carry a variety of bombs, rockets and missiles. Although the aircraft has been retired for a number of years in the Russian and most other air forces it was believed, that the North Korean air force still had some in service.
