The MiG-25 entered service in 1974 and is the fastest jet fighter ever produced. It was designed to counter the the American Mach 3 capable bomber, the Valkyrie, which never saw service. It is capable of Mach 3.2 but is usually restricted to Mach 2.8, as exceeding Mach 3 damages the engines. This makes it the second fastest jet aircraft, ever to see active service after the SR-71A Blackbird.  It is a very large bulky fighter, powered by 2 huge afterburning engines and the original fighter version was armed only with 4 huge Acrid air to air missiles, both in radar guided and infra red versions.
The PD and PDS versions had improved engines and radars and could replace 2 of the Acrid missiles with 4 smaller Aphid missile, giving it more options in combat. There is also reconnaissance and strike versions and a much improved development, the MiG-31 Foxhound. The MiG-31, unlike the MiG-25 carries an internal cannon and has a wider variety of air to air missiles and has superseded the MiG-25 in the Russian Air Force.
When the MiG-25 entered service, there was many concerns in NATO about its high performance, so there was much relief when Russian Pilot, Victor Balenko, defected to Japan with his MiG-25, in 1976. The MiG-25 has been involved in many combat situations in the Middle East, on occasions using its speed to evade other fighters but several were destroyed in the early 80's by Israeli F-15's. During the Iran-Iraq war, Iraqi MiG 25's proved superior to Iranian Phantoms and F-5's, claiming 19 Iranian fighters shot down for the loss of 2 MiG-25's (to F-14's). The MiG-25 was responsible for the Iraqi Air Force's only victory of the first gulf war when one shot down a US F/A-18 Hornet. In 2002 an Iraqi MiG-25 shot down an armed US drone and evaded the Stinger missile fired by the drone.
Kitty Hawk are a new manufacturer from China that are producing high quality kits. The kit looks well detailed with engraved panel lines and plenty of internal detail. It comes with plenty of choice for ordnance and has a placement guide as well as a small fret of photo etch parts, including instrument panels and seatbelts.
There are markings for 3 different MiG-25's of the Russian, Iraqi and Ukraine Air Forces.
