The IAR-80 was a Romanian fighter aircraft that entered production in 1941 after a long and troublesome development. It was roughly equivalent to the Hurricane and the initial versions only had 2 machine guns. After a few months an upgraded version with more power, 6 machine guns, new gunsight and pilot armour entered production. Further versions introduced a heavy machine gun into the armament and eventually the MG 151 20mm cannon. There was also dive-bomber/ground attack variant, designated as the IAR-81. The IAR-80/81's were mainly used on the Eastern Front against the Russians and to defend the Ploesti oil refineries with mixed successes. Heavy losses by mid 1944 saw most of them replaced with Messerschmitt Bf109G-6's
