The A-6 Intruder was designed as an all weather strike aircraft for deployment on the US Navy's Aircraft Carriers. It was a large aircraft with twin engines, a 2 man crew and a payload of up to 18000lbs. A Squadron of A-6's aboard each carrier gave the carrier's airwing a big boost in strike capability. They could be used in combination with the other strike aircraft, the A-4 Skyhawk and A-7 Corsair II during daylight missions but also gave the carrier a strike force capable of operating at night and during low visibility conditions. The A-6 entered service in 1963 and saw action in the Vietnam war. They have also been in action over Lebanon, Libya, the first Gulf War, Somalia and Bosnia. US Defence cutbacks and restructuring in the late 1990's saw the US Navy cutting down on the types of aircraft operated. The A-6 was withdrawn and replaced in the all weather heavy strike role by modified F-14 Tomcats which have now in turn been replaced by the F/A-18F Super Hornet.
The kit is well detailed with fine engraved panel lines and comes with some photo etch metal parts, white metal landing gear legs and decals for 2 different aircraft.
