The D series were interim fighters used as a stop gap measure while the superior Ta152 was being developed. The main difference was that they were powered by a Jumo inverted V-12 engine with annular radiator, instead of the BMW 801 Radial. Performance was greatly enhanced and they were able (with a good pilot) hold their own against the likes of the Mustang and Spitfire XIV.
Following on from the Fw190D series the Ta152 was set to be the ultimate in German single seat piston engined fighters. They were built in 3 versions; the H, which was the high altitude version with the Jumo engine from the Fw190D, the engine was fitted with extra boosting systems and a long wing span, this was the fastest version with a top speed of around 475 mph. The C was a low to medium altitude fighter and fighter bomber. It was powered by a 2100hp DB603 inverted V12 engine and heavily armed with 1 30mm cannon and 4 20mm cannons. This made it a formidable bomber destroyer and it also meant it only needed several hits to down enemy fighters. The final version was the E, which was a photo recon variant of the C. Like many German advanced weapons, only a handful ever saw service and therefore were unable to turn the tide of the war.
The R14 was a designation for the Ta152C-1 modified to carry an ariel torpedo. This was experimental and not used in combat.
Hobby Boss are a Chinese company and are often affiliated with Trumpeter. Hobby Boss kits are generally well engineered with a high standard of detail. The Ta152 is no exception, is also comes with a small etch fret which includes the seatbelts and a few other parts.
