HBB80365 1/48 McDonnell F3H-2M Demon
- Customer Reviews
Early versions were plagued by unreliable and underpowered engines. This was partly rectified by fitting the more powerful and reliable Allison J71 Turbojet engine.
Despite the increase in power, the plane was still underpowered and a bit sluggish, leading to the nickname, 'Lead sled'. The F3H-2N was capable of using the heatseeking AIM 9 Sidewinder missile while the F3H-2M added the capability to use the longer range radar guided AIM 7 Sparrow missile.
The Demon had a short career in the US Navy, being first deployed in 1956 and the last squadron retired in 1964, when there were enough F4 Phantoms to go round.
