The Grumman F8F-1 was designed to replace the earlier Hellcat and Wildcat fighters for the US Navy. The plane was designed round a more powerful version of the same engine as the Hellcat but the airframe was much smaller. This gave the new fighter an increased performance and climb rate as well as greater agility. On the downside it could carry less bombs and rockets but the US Navy retained the Corsair for fighter bomber missions. The F8F was just too late to see service in WW2 but equipped US Navy fighter squadrons straight after the war. It was still in service during the Korean war but the front line squadrons replaced the F8F with the jet powered Panthers and Banshees. It served well into the 50's with the French, Thai and Vietnamese air forces.
