The Nieuport 17 was developed from the earlier model 11 and it featured a more powerful engine, larger wings and was more aerodynamic. It had an excellent climb rate and agility but the lower wing was weak and could disintegrate in a high speed dive. Nevertheless, it entered service in 1916 and was was by many French Aces as well as US and Italian pilots. The Nieuport 23, was a development of the 17 which cured the structural issues and introduced a lighter engine, increasing the power to weight ratio.
