The Spitfire Mk IX was made from a Mk Vc airframe and a Rolls Royce 60 Series Merlin engine with 2 stage supercharger. It was done to provide a temporary counter to the German Fw190, which was vastly superior to the Mk V Spitfires. However, the conversion was a success straight away and it became the second most produced Spitfire mark after the Mk V. It was good enough to keep the definitive Merlin Spitfire, the Mk VIII, from being manufactured in huge numbers!
There was also a similar Spitfire, the Mk XVI, which was powered by a Packard built Merlin engine, which is the subject of this set. By the time these entered service the Luftwaffe was a shadow of its former self, so most were employed as fighter-bombers.

Eduard are a Czech based manufacturer famed for their model accessories but they have in the last few years released a successful range of kits. The Profipacks contain a kit with several marking options, along with a Colour Zoom etch set, Canopy Mask and a full colour instruction booklet. This kit is highly detailed and quite possibly the best ever Spitfire kit in 1/72.

The Longest Day DUAL COMBO Limited Edition 1/72 scale kit of British fighter aircraft Spitfire Mk.IX. The Dual Combo style product offers two full kits of Spitfire MK.IXc and Spitfire Mk.IXe flown by RAF during D-day or shortly afterwards. All a/c are painted with D-day stripes.
