The Panavia Tornado was a joint venture between the UK, Germany and Italy in the 1970's to produce a multi-role strike and reconnaisance aircraft. In its original form and updated versions of the original form, it has proved to be an excellent strike aircraft, which had only just been retired by the RAF after numerous actions in combat. In the 1980's the RAF wanted a new interceptor to replace the Lightning and Phantom, so the Tornado was adapted and fitted with a powerful radar and some of the latest and best air to air missiles. Although the Tornado F.3 didn't have the agility for dogfights it still proved an able interceptor with its radar/weapons combination. The Tornado F.3 was retired from the RAF in 2011 and has been replaced by the more advanced Eurofighter Typhoon.
