Mutsu was the sister ship of Nagato and entered service in 1921 as arguably the most powerful battleship in the world, armed with eight 16 inch guns, good armour and a speed of 26 knots (the fastest battleship when completed). She was progressively modified during her service to improve her both operationally and to fit more modern equipment, and her appearance had changed considerably by the time of the Pearl Harbour raid. Mutsu operated with her sister ship Nagato for much of her time and during WW2 she saw limited action. She was part of distant support fleets for the Pearl Harbour raid and the Battle of Midway . She was transferred to Truk to support the Guadalcanal campaign, where she again was part of a distant support fleet, this time at the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. During the battle she fired several times at an American reconnaisance aircraft, which proved to be the only time she fired any of her guns at an enemy. Mutsu returned to Japan in early 1943. On the 8th June 1943 a massive explosion occurred from the magazine of no 3 turret and cut the ship in half. The forward section sank quickly but the aft section remained afloat for a while. The ship's sinking was kept a secret to prevent further loss of morale. Parts of the ship including some gun barrels, rudder, anchor and propellor were salvaged and can be seen in museums in Japan.
This kit of Mutsu represents the ship in 1942 and is a Full Hull only model with optional brass main gun barrels
