AIR06017 1/72 McDonnell-Douglas FGR.2 Phantom
- Customer Reviews
Entering service with the US Navy in 1960, the Phantom went on to be used as a strike aircraft with a heavy bomb load and was major export success being used by many Air Forces and Navies around the world including the USAF, Royal Navy, RAF, Luftwaffe, Japanese Air Force and many more.
In the US, it was replaced in the 1980's in Navy service by the F-14 and in the USAF by the F-15. The RAF replaced its Phantoms with the Tornado F3.
British Phantoms were fitted with Rolls Royce Spey engines which were larger, more powerful engines that required the rear fuselage of the Phantom to be redesigned to fit them.
The FG.1 (F-4K) was used by the Royal Navy, most famously aboard HMS Ark Royal and this was equipped for both air to air and air to ground missions. When HMS Ark Royal was retired from service in 1978, the Royal Navy Phantoms were passed onto the RAF. The FGR.2 (F-4M) had an additional reconnaissance role and entered operational service with the RAF in 1969. RAF Phantoms were based at home for air defence but were also deployed to Germany, Cyprus and the Falklands. One of the last notable use of Phantoms by the RAF was to provide air defence in Cyprus while the more advanced Tornados were deployed in action in the first Gulf War.
This is Airfix's all new Phantom kit and it looks to be very detailed with engraved panel lines and different build options There are markings for 3 RAF Phantoms.
